Ok let me make it straight. You want to buy a game. You need to look at the game region as well that is compatible for your console. You know your cash is tight. For this case study I'll make it to 3 case between Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 (sorry only NTSC region discussed).
We know that Wii has 2 NTSC version which is NTSC-U and NTSC-J. The U is for US region (which makes it is on English language) and NTSC-J (on Japanese language). This case is simple. I'll take Metroid : Other M (NTSC-U) and (NTSC-J) to compare. Each cost USD55 and USD75. Well I read English of course I'm getting US version. USD20 save.
Blu-Ray format. New region coding BUT fortunately for games it is UNIVERSAL (YES any region of games can be played on any region of PS3 console). Whether is European, U.S. , Japan or Asia. Now take this upcoming Castlevania game to compare. One is U.S. and one is Asia. Both offers English version BUT the price different is USD6. There you go. Another USD6 save from the same game ONLY on the region difference.
For Xbox 360:
Now this case is more interesting. 2 region of console (NTSC-U and NTSC-J) but 3 region type of games (U.S. , Japan and Asia). We take Lost Planet 2 (U.S. , Japan and Asia) to compare. Each priced at USD45, USD69 and USD35. Take Japan region out (since it only have 1 language for the game). USD10 save for picking Asia over U.S. region. In fact, Asia region offers more language than U.S. version.
Now you have it. Just pick the cheaper region which is Asia over others and you can save more on game purchase. Of course there some special case that you need to look at.
1) Unless some of the game are only exclusive for Japan only (these are few example for PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii), you have no choice but only getting the most expensive region.
2) For Xbox 360, most of the Asia region games are open region (means it can be play on all region console of Xbox 360 whether is PAL, NTSC-U or NTSC-J console). There are particular game like this one is only for NTSC-U and PAL console only. You can't play it on NTSC-J console. Same as this game here only for NTSC-J console. So be sure to check on your compatibility of the game and console first before you buy. Double check.
So there you have it. Hope this little tips can help you in a long journey for your future game purchase. Go for Asia region.
